Our upcoming new members class is Sunday, May 16, from 1:30-3:30pm at a church members' home. Email for directions.

The goal of this meeting is for you to hear about LVBC and ask any questions your heart desires. We divide up our time together under three headings.
1. What We Believe (studying the Statement of Faith that roots us)
2. What We Do (studying the Membership Covenant that exhorts us)
3. How We Do It (the specifics of life together at LVBC).
For your general edification, here are five reasons to join a local church.
  1. Joining a church is a part of what it means to be a Christian. In the New Testament, Paul repeatedly refers to the church as the body of Christ. This is an amazingly intimate analogy. If we are in Christ, redeemed by his blood and united to him, then we are part of his body, the church. This is our new identity. We are the church.
  2. Joining a church keeps us from falling into sin. Sin is manipulative and deceitful. Left to ourselves, we can give in to it, stop battling it, and instead embrace it as part of who we are. The main thing God has set up for us in order to deal with this self-deception is the local church. Here we are held accountable to live in a manner worthy of the gospel.
  3. Joining a church allows church leaders to care for you well. In the New Testament, church leaders are given the weighty task of shepherding God’s church (Heb. 13:17). They will be held accountable for what they teach and how they lead. When you join a church, you are letting the church and its leaders know that they are responsible for you. Church leaders cannot lead you well unless you commit to being under their authority.
  4. Joining a church shows the world what Christ is like. Jesus told his disciples in John 15:33, “By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” At LVBC, we may look very different in ethnicity, financial status, lifestyle, and family background. But what unifies us, what we all have in common, is Christ. When we live unified in community as a church, we show Christ to the world.
  5. Joining a church brings glory to God. Jesus clearly and closely identifies with his church. She is his bride, the one he died for to ransom from sin and death. As we grow in grace and understand more how to live out the gospel in love for each other, we do this in the context of the local church.
